Why I’m Not Job Hunting Alone Anymore (And Why You Shouldn't Either)

The hiring market right now feels a bit like trying to start a fire in a rainstorm. It’s slow. It’s damp. And if you’re doing it by yourself, it’s incredibly frustrating.

Today, everything changed. I sat down for the very first meeting of my Job Search Council. We come from completely different worlds: Government, Consumer Goods, Tech, and FinOps. On paper, we don't have much in common. In reality? We’re all staring at the same uphill climb.

What is "Never Search Alone"?

If you haven't heard of it, it’s a movement based on Phyl Terry’s philosophy. The core idea is simple: Job searching is a broken, isolating process, and no one should do it by themselves. Instead of shouting into the void of Easy Apply buttons, you form a small, disciplined council of peers. We support each other, hold each other accountable, and most importantly remind each other that our value isn't defined by a recruiter's silence.

The Vibe: Radical Support

The atmosphere today was immediately supportive. No posturing, no "LinkedIn-bro" hustle culture—just six people being honest. We’re all optimistic, but we aren't delusional; the hiring market is moving at a glacial pace.

But even in a slow market, there’s a way to find traction.

Takeaway #1: Use Your People

The biggest realization from our first hour together? It’s all about the humans. We all agreed that the old mindset of "applying until your fingers bleed" is a dead end. The new mindset? Networking is the only way through. I shared with the group how my LinkedIn posts and my blog have become my secret weapons. They aren't just for personal branding—they create a routine. They keep me sharp. Most importantly, they connect me to opportunities that aren't on a job board. In fact, that exact strategy led to 5+ interviews just this past week.

Takeaway #2: Learn from the "Cross-Pollination"

I’m already learning from the FinOps and Gov folks in my group. Different industries have different "hacks," and seeing the world through their lens is already shifting my perspective. When you talk to people outside your bubble, you stop obsessing over industry jargon and start focusing on value.

The Mindset Shift: The Power of "We"

Going into today, I thought I just needed better leads. I realized I actually needed a better community.

The group agreed: the secret sauce isn't a better resume font; it’s the people you know and the people you are getting to know. My council is a reminder that while I’m the one who eventually signs the contract, I don't have to be the one doing all the heavy lifting in isolation.

Stop Searching in the Dark

If you’re currently looking for your next role and feeling the weight of the slow market, stop doing it alone.

  • Join the Movement: Check out the Never Search Alone community to join or start your own council.

  • Follow My Journey: I'm documenting my progress and what I'm learning in real-time. Let’s connect on LinkedIn here: linkedin.com/in/thomashbryant/

It’s much harder to lose hope when you have five other people pulling for you.
